The 2026 BMW X2 gets more standard features and is more expensive

Beneath its stylish and simple appearance, the BMW X2 is identical to the more traditionally shaped BMW X1. So it stands to reason that the model usually receives the same updates and upgrades year after year. After adding heated seats and a 5G hotspot to the standard equipment last year, BMW is going even further with the 2026 BMW X2. Wireless cell phone charging, auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors and Comfort Access keyless entry are now free, improving the small SUV’s already impressive value. Aside from the optimizations to the standard equipment, the X2 receives a new exterior paint finish: Dune Grey. Production for the 2026 model year begins in July 2025 and is therefore available now.

No news is good news in the powertrain department. The latest X2 adopts a familiar and proven setup under the hood. Both trim levels feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. It’s a strong and responsive pair, made even better by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic that delivers quick and precise shifts in every situation.

In the X2 xDrive28i, this setup produces 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque — more than enough for a small crossover. However, despite an impressive torque figure, speed is not the entry-level model’s strong point. It goes from zero to 100 km/h in around 6.2 seconds. Step up to the M35i and power increases to 312 hp, although torque remains the same. BMW says it will hit 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, and that number feels entirely believable. For those who value a bit of performance, the M35i easily justifies its higher price.

While the X2’s powertrain may not be as inspiring as that of a full-fat M-series car, it manages to balance performance and efficiency well. The EPA estimates that the standard X2 xDrive achieves 28 mpg combined, thanks to 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the hotter “M lite” clearly trades performance for fuel economy. The EPA estimates fuel economy for the 2026 BMW X2 M35i at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, for a total of 26 mpg. Like most other luxury subcompact SUVs, the 2026 BMW X2 mimics cockpits from models above. A more traditional steering wheel – and the lack of leather options – are the key differentiators. But actually, the X2’s interior isn’t much different than what you’ll find in more upscale models like the X3. Opting for the M Sport package unlocks cool thrones with Alcantara accents that make the interior feel even more premium.

The 2026 BMW X2 offers drivers 51.7 cubic feet of cargo space, about 5.5 cubic feet less than the more practical BMW X1. The model retains its 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback, which is helpful and noticeably missing from some rivals. The Volvo XC40, for example, only offers a 60/40 split. Overall, the X2 isn’t the most practical SUV choice. But that’s the price you pay for the vehicle’s unique design.

There are no updates to note in this area for the X2. The latest version still features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central touchscreen, both of which are part of the BMW Curved Display located at the top of the dashboard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard features. One notable downside to the X2 (and its X1 sibling) is how quickly costs rise once you start adding options. But there is actually good news.

As the standard equipment level (and, er, MSRP – we’ll get to that later) increases, the price of the Convenience Package also drops. The price drops by $700, now at $1,100, offering even better value. Check the box: you get a panoramic roof, a heated steering wheel and remote engine start. The technology package also advertises cheaper prices. Now it’s worth thinking about: the price is $2,600 (up from $3,200 last year) and the provision of augmented reality features, a head-up display and a surround-view camera.

The X2 doesn’t get any new driver assistance technologies this year, but it still has the essentials. Frontal collision warning, active blind spot detection and lane departure warning are standard. Parking sensors (Park Distance Control) are also included, but a full surround view camera system remains hidden behind the optional technology package. Drivers can add active cruise control for $500 or get the adaptive version with stop-and-go functionality for $1,700. Active Cruise is a solid upgrade, but the more expensive option seems unnecessary. After all, the appeal of the

BMW is increasing prices for the 2026 BMW X2. The small SUV starts at $44,300 before delivery, up from $42,450 last year. That’s a price increase that may not be in proportion to the additional standard equipment, but it is some consolation. Stepping up to the more powerful X2 M35i xDrive means you’ll have to fork out $53,400. While that’s a significant price increase – you could take home an X3 with a few options for the same amount – the extra equipment is arguably worth it. The more aggressive engine, suspension, tire and wheel setup, and aesthetics alone make it worth it. Additional standard equipment, such as a Harman/Kardon sound system, further increases the value.

2026 BMW X2: Our opinion

We love the X2 for the same reasons as the X1. It’s a dynamic small SUV that drives as well as the segment allows. Style is a matter of taste, but the X2 isn’t the most unusual design to come out of Munich these days. We’d actually only choose the BMW X1 to enjoy a slightly lower MSRP and slightly more cargo space. Either way, things don’t get much better when it comes to compact SUVs.
