The BMW XM is arguably the brand’s most polarizing offering. That doesn’t change for the latest model year, which adds some new cosmetic options, a simplified lineup (at least in the US), and a slightly lower price. New black-painted Style 1096 wheels join the options list, and the XM Label (the only version available in the U.S. for 2026) is now available in Brooklyn Gray Metallic. You can also choose from some new color options inside. Night Blue/Coffee and Black/Coffee are new additions, while Fiona Red Merino leather disappears from the options list. BMW also claims that the new XM charges slightly faster than the old one. AC charging is now up to 11 kW (the old maximum was 7.4 kW). Finally, the 2026 BMW XM Label now starts at $159,600, over $25,000 less than the 2025 price.
2026 BMW XM engine, transmission and performance
Incredibly, the BMW XM is still the most powerful BMW M car ever. Its powertrain consists of a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and a synchronous electric motor. The xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF help reduce power. Total combined output is 738 horsepower, and BMW says the XM will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Not bad for something the size of a planet – it weighs 6,091 pounds. Optional 23-inch wheels improve handling slightly, but at the expense of ride quality. Buy for your goals, but we would skip them. The XM’s weight is evident from behind the wheel, but it’s unquestionably quick when you put the hammer down.
2026 BMW XM Fuel Economy and MPG
The EPA found that the BMW XM Label consumes just 14 mpg overall when the truck’s load is exhausted. In hybrid mode, the XM achieved 47 mpge overall and an all-electric range of 29 miles. The organization also noted that the XM took about two hours to fully charge. An 18.2-gallon fuel tank means a 300-mile range is possible but not guaranteed.
Interior and cargo space
The interior of the 2026 BMW XM remains unchanged since the model’s first model year. With the elimination of the “base” model, the XM also has a shortened options list; that is, there are none. Everything comes standard on the XM, including amenities like Alcantara-wrapped cabin pillars, an Alcantara headliner unique to the model and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system. Ventilated, heated and massage chairs are also standard. The XM offers 18.6 cubic feet of trunk space, which isn’t much. But luckily there are split-folding rear seats. Regardless, hauling cargo isn’t really the XM’s forte.
2026 BMW XM technology and connectivity
The XM comes with iDrive 8.5, displayed on a 14.9-inch central display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The usual customization options are available, such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and voice commands. As in the past, the 2026 BMW XM features high-end technology normally reserved for the 7 Series and its ilk. Examples include soft-close automatic doors and heated/cooled cup holders. However, no additions for the new model year.
Safety and driver assistance functions
The XM continues to come standard with most driver assistance features. These include basic systems such as lane departure warning and blind spot detection, but also more advanced systems such as traffic jam assistant. While the XM lacks the very latest driver assistance systems such as changing lanes with a glance in the appropriate side mirror, the basics and much more are covered. The best part is that everything is included with the BMW XM without having to tick any option boxes or incur additional costs.
Prices for the BMW XM 2026
The best news for the 2026 BMW XM is actually value-based. Since (in the U.S.) the The new price is more based on the base price of the XM 2025, which started at $159,000.
2026 BMW XM: Our opinion
While the XM Label’s price cut is nice, the SUV is still far from what we’d call a bargain. But it’s certainly a better choice now than before. However, for our money we would probably still take the 2026 BMW X5 M or the 2026 BMW X6 M. Both start at a lower price and are lighter and faster than the XM. Another appealing alternative is of course the 2026 BMW M5, which uses an identical powertrain and offers an overall better driving experience. It’s pretty late in the XM’s life cycle. So if you want one, now might be the time to get it. The SUV probably won’t live past 2028.
