MINI Countryman Rugged Edition debuts with all-terrain tires

With 93,305 units sold, the Countryman was by far MINI’s best-selling model last year. It accounted for about a third of all deliveries in 2025 after deliveries of the model rose 81.8% year-over-year. With the internal code name “U25”, the crossover based on the BMW X1 starts the new year with a special version.

Exclusive to South Africa, the Countryman Rugged Edition will be a rare sight. MINI is only offering 100 units in Nanuq White, Legend Grey, Melting Silver or Smokey Green. Regardless of color, all feature stripes on the hood and mountain-themed decals on the C-pillars. The not-so-small crossover rides on 18-inch Y-spoke wheels in Frozen Midnight Gray.

The only upgrade that truly lives up to the special edition’s “Rugged” moniker is the tire choice. MINI is equipped with General Grabber AT3 all-terrain rubber to make the Countryman more capable off the beaten track. A roof box or a bicycle rack are also available as optional extensions from the MINI Original Accessories catalog.

MINI COUNTRYMAN RUGGED EDITION 2

Customers can order the Countryman Rugged Edition with either a three- or four-cylinder engine. MINI sells its largest production model exclusively in the Countryman C and Countryman S versions. The special variant is not available as the hotter John Cooper Works or as the fully electric SE ALL4. If you want one of these, the standard Countryman for South Africa comes in JCW and EV flavors.

It’s surprising that MINI South Africa even offers the Rugged Edition in front-wheel drive, given the off-road oriented theme. By opting for the Countryman S with four cylinders, the engine power is also sent to the rear wheels. Regardless of the configuration, power is transmitted via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is installed in all current-generation MINIs.

While the interior was carried over unchanged, all-weather floor mats were added to emphasize the Countryman’s more adventurous character. Higher suspension would have been a suitable upgrade, but unfortunately the Rugged Edition doesn’t ride any higher than the standard model.

Prices start at R833,903.10, or just under $51,000 at current exchange rates, for the Countryman C and rise to R989,938.30 ($60,300) for the more powerful S.
