The BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition pays tribute to the Turbo from 2002 – only with manual transmission, limited to the USA

BMW ends the year with a wave of nostalgia. After the 325iS and 333i Homage Editions for South Africa, the USA is now getting its own new edition: the 2026 BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition. It will be built in extremely limited numbers and revives the spirit of the legendary 2002 Turbo with hand-painted M stripes and a manual transmission.

You can have it in any color as long as it is Alpine White. The retro touch is immediately noticeable, starting with the hand-painted M stripes that run around the hood and trunk lid. To drive home the point, BMW M also applies the iconic blue, purple and red colors to the carbon fiber roof. The hood bulge is finished in black and features a mirrored “Turbo” graphic reminiscent of Europe’s first turbocharged production car.

The 1970s theme continues at the rear with a “Turbo” badge below the M2 logo. Inside, a similar plaque, this time in M colors, adorns the lid of the cup holders. As a final touch, BMW embellishes the side skirts with “Turbo” lettering in the same retro font.

Beyond the 2002 port, this is a well-equipped 2026 M2. The aforementioned carbon roof is standard, as is the lighting package with adaptive full-LED headlights and automatic high beam. BMW also offers a carbon rear spoiler, a heated Alcantara steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and wireless charging.

A regular M2 with these options would cost around $75,000, but the 2002 Turbo-inspired details push the price up to $84,075, including shipping and handling fees. Add the $2,500 million optional driver package, $4,500 in carbon bucket seats, and $6,266 in matte gold-bronze wheels, and you come to $97,341. The sticker puts it uncomfortably close to the $99,775 M2 CS.

Just like its source of inspiration, the Turbo Design Edition is also equipped exclusively with a manual transmission. It has six gears instead of the four or five gears that were fitted to the 1,672 examples of the original 2002 Turbo. Available only in the US, the M2 is based on the regular 473 hp model, rather than the 523 hp of the automatic-only CS model. For comparison, that’s still about 2.8 times what the 2002 Turbo offered about half a century ago.

Production will begin in the first quarter of 2026, with delivery beginning at the beginning of the next quarter.
