BMW Hymt constantly new class and the next generation batteries that only accompany the platform in an electrical way. However, an essential detail was deliberately left out. Until now. We finally have some preliminary numbers in which we can sink our teeth. This week, BMWblog visited a workshop in the Battery Cell Manufacturing Competency Center in Parsdorf, where we learned more about Gen6 batteries.
BMW mentions that the next generation battery unlocks 900 kilometers for a single load, although it is not determined which models can reach this area. If you are on the other side of the pond, that’s a spacious 560 miles. We were told that all electric cars based in NEE will deliver at least 600 km (373 miles). This is about as much as the average petrol car. We won’t go so far to say that range is healed. However, we gradually come to it when the technology progresses.
BMW is currently planning two cell sizes, depending on the size of the car. Gen6 batteries switch from today’s prismatic cells to round cells with more than 20% higher energy density. The loading speed will be increased by up to 30%. The Bavarian brand has already confirmed an 800-volt system for fast charging, which allows 300 kilometers (186 miles) reach after 10 minutes on a charging station. The bidirectional fee is also supported.
When the Vision Nee class X was premiered about a year ago, the electric frequency crossover had other changes to increase efficiency. The concept contained a slippery aero-optimized body with a 20% lower resistance than the outgoing IX3 based on the Clar platform. In addition, the EV showed the next generation new brakes and tires that contributed to an overall efficiency of 25%.
The first production model, which benefits from gene6 batteries with round cells, comes later this year. The second generation’s IX3 will be followed by an i3 sedan in 2026. BMW will run at least four more electric vehicles by 2028. There are no names, but we expect an i3 touring, an IX4 and China-specific models.
