The new M2 Drift Competition comes to the BMW World

It’s been a while since a new BMW made such a spectacular debut. Earlier this week we saw the M2 Drift Competition celebrated by Elias Hountondji of the Red Bull Driftbrothers at the Munich factory. The one-off G87 will be on display at BMW Welt in the next few days. Until November 5th, fans can see the wild build-up ahead of its competitive debut next year.

We’d argue it’s the craziest build based on the second-gen M2 yet. Not only because it has over 1,000 horsepower, but also because of its extraordinary design. The swollen fenders and the pronounced bulge of the hood make the M2 CS seem almost tame in comparison. A characteristic feature of the Driftbrothers’ M4 was also adopted: the exhaust mounted directly under the roof.

Although it may seem like a publicity stunt, the car was built with real racing ambitions. After extensive modifications carried out by Red Bull Driftbrothers’ in-house 229performance workshop, it is set to compete in the 2026 Drift Masters European Championship. The M2 has been reduced to a single-seater configuration and only features a full roll cage and a body-hugging driver’s seat.

Designed specifically for shredding tires, this tail-happy coupe should prove to be an even sharper drifting machine than its M4-based predecessor thanks to its smaller footprint. With an incredible 1,085 horsepower delivered to the rear wheels, the M2 Drift Competition is clearly not for the faint of heart. Fun fact: It actually produces more power than the M4 before it.

Of course, BMW will never build something this extreme for the street. This car’s sole purpose is to drive sideways in a professional environment and be driven by drivers skilled enough to handle so much power in a relatively small and light package.

While the M division doesn’t have nearly as wild plans, an extremely street-legal M2 could still be on the cards. When we spoke to M engineering boss Dirk Häcker at the beginning of the year, he didn’t rule out the possibility of an M2 CSL. But even if it happens, don’t expect it until the final stages of the G87 life cycle.
