This 1996 BMW Z3 James Bond Edition has just been sold – and the price might surprise you

The connection between BMW and GoldenEye is almost 30 years old, but the 1996 BMW Z3 James Bond Edition still strikes a nostalgic nerve – especially when a well-preserved example turns up at auction. This is exactly what happened at Bonhams, where chassis 4USCH7322TLE00766, number 66 of 100, sold for €24,640 including premium.

This was more than just another limited edition Z3. It was the first time that a new production car was introduced to the public through a major film. When Pierce Brosnan got behind the wheel in “GoldenEye,” it immediately brought BMW’s new roadster onto the world stage.

Neiman Marcus took advantage of the opportunity and offered an exclusive “James Bond Edition” in its 1995 Christmas catalog. The plan was to sell 50 pieces. They disappeared within days, forcing BMW to approve another 50 to meet demand. The result is a small series of 100 examples – one of the smallest special editions in BMW’s modern history.

Number 66: A clean, low mileage example

The car that crossed the block is a strong example of what makes this edition so special. All James Bond Z3s were painted Atlantic Blue Metallic, trimmed with saddle leather, and featured “007” emblems, number plaques, and memorabilia. Of course, there were no Bond gadgets – but the connection to the film was the whole point.

This example shows just 8,300 miles and has an unusually complete history, including original correspondence from Neiman Marcus to its first owner. It’s rare that the documentation for a special edition from the mid-90s is so intact. The car was recently part of Movie Cars Central’s collection after being purchased from a private owner in Connecticut. The original telephone set, US title and customs form (846A) are preserved. It hasn’t been used regularly, so the buyer should expect some basic maintenance before it gets back on the road.

A small but important BMW Bond artifact

The price – €24,640 – reflects where these cars are today: collectibles, but still affordable. These are not hero cars used on screen, nor were they crammed with movie props. They represent a specific moment when BMW burst into pop culture with a single product placement that worked better than expected.

Three decades later, the James Bond Z3 remains a quirky, cool chapter in BMW’s history. And clean, low-mileage examples like #66 won’t be any easier to find. You can see photos of the car at Bonhams.
