Even taking into account BMW’s already high luxury standards, some cars are well outside the normal product roadmap. Built to satisfy a niche clientele, they quietly fade into history, often remembered only by dedicated enthusiasts. The E38-based BMW L7 is one of those cars – a model whose significance has less to do with sales volume or performance figures and more to do with what it signaled about BMW’s ambitions at the top of the market at the turn of the century. There’s one for sale in the US at Bring a Trailer, and it’s a solid example that could be perfect for someone wanting to get a closer look at the absolute pinnacle of the BMW range in 1999.
About the BMW L7 – and why it is important

The BMW L7 is an exclusive luxury sedan with an extended wheelbase based on the BMW 7 Series E38 and was produced from 1997 to 2001. It has a 250 mm (10 inch) longer wheelbase than the standard 7 Series “iL” models. The L7 is powered by a 5.4-liter V12 engine, the M73, which delivers approximately 326 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a five-speed automatic transmission and is rear-wheel drive only. But performance was far from the only thing the unique E38 had to offer. The driver and passengers enjoyed luxury class amenities, some of which could not be found on any other BMW model. Things like padded leather seats, a fax machine and a privacy screen made the L7 the epitome of luxury. It was mainly sold in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe.
In the larger patchwork of BMW history, the L7 is as big a deal as its wheelbase suggests. The BMW L7 was one of the earliest projects from the then young BMW Individual. Despite being introduced six years before the L7’s release, the E38 was only the second 7 Series chassis to receive this treatment – and the previous E32 never received an extended wheelbase model. Production of E38 L7 is also extremely low. Only 899 examples were produced in all markets around the world.

For the BMW L7 up for auction, one of the biggest hurdles to owning an L7 has already been removed, at least in the United States: It is already in the United States. Imported via Canada in 2024, the car is painted in elegant midnight blue metallic with champagne leather upholstery. 20-inch ALPINA wheels and an ALPINA front lip are additions that complement the vehicle’s color scheme very well. The car has approximately 57,000 miles (92,000 kilometers) on the clock and the brakes, brake lines and control arms have been recently checked. There is always good news with this car too. Most impressively, the self-leveling suspension appears to work. The owner also has a lot of dealer literature that goes with the car, including an owner’s manual.

The greatest appeal of this car is, of course, the wonderful amount of space in which the rear passengers can ride. Again, the car doesn’t disappoint as it comes with a veritable range of L7 options. Amenities include a VHS player, a refrigerator and a footrest in the rear. Double glazing insulates, while sun blinds set the mood. As expected, the L7’s cabin is a wonderful place to spend your time – this one seems to be no exception.
Should you buy it?

The tender is already underway as there are still five days left on the line. But it’s obvious that if you want an L7, you simply don’t have many options available. Especially if you are based in the USA. As anecdotal evidence, this is the first E38 BMW L7 to land at Bring a Trailer. To determine whether a car is worth it, two factors usually need to be taken into account: rarity and desirability. I think we have our answer to the first question. Considering the epic V12 engine under the hood, the list of nostalgic fuel options, and the still-gorgeous E38 aesthetic – with a few small cosmetic tweaks – we think there’s certainly an argument for the latter too.
