Six years after discontinuation, BMW sold brand new 6 Series GTs

Do you remember the BMW 6 Series? We do that too, but it’s been years since BMW discontinued the model. According to this logic, it shouldn’t be easy to buy a new one either. But apparently two lucky customers managed to take home a brand new BMW 6 Series last year – six years after the 6 Series officially went out of production.

Our friends over there Engine1 discovered, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the two 6 Series that remained on the lot more than half a decade after their discontinuation had the body style of the 6 Series GT. One was sold in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter, and BMW actually managed to move a number of these cars “posthumously.” BMW North America sold a single 6 Series in 2024, 55 examples in 2021, and a whopping 200 cars in 2020. That’s even more impressive when you consider that the 6 Series Gran Turismo – called “GT” – was one of the lowest-produced 6 Series body styles. BMW only offered it for two model years in North America.

Of course, it’s significantly less impressive when you look at the car. The GT models – which spanned the 3, 5 and 6 series – were a sort of elevated hatchback, a cross between station wagon and sedan body styles. However, rather than capturing the best of both worlds, the GT models have, in a sense, compromised both body styles. While a handy liftback increased practicality, space was limited compared to a station wagon. Furthermore, the unusual proportions did him no favors at all. Each GT model sold slowly and in small numbers. Since the 6 GT was the most expensive, it was also the most difficult to transport.

The 6 Series GT isn’t the only blast from the past

In addition to a few 6 Series GTs, BMW managed to sell another car that had been out of production for some time. It’s nothing other than the BMW i3, which you can love or hate. And we’re not talking about the electrified version of the 3 Series sedan. We’re talking about the I01 BMW i3, the city car that represents one of BMW’s earliest forays into mainstream electrification. Elsewhere in the BMW family, a MINI model has also risen from the dead. Although production ended in February 2024, MINI managed to sell 14 examples of the MINI Cooper Clubman, the split-door hatchback version of the MINI Cooper 4-Door, in 2025.

Despite its slow sales, the 6 Series GT was actually quite good value for money in some respects. It was significantly cheaper than the 7 Series, even though it had similar air suspension. There was even rear-seat entertainment, which combined with the extra cargo space made it a better choice compared to the modern 7 Series for some buyers. It’s a shame that sales figures never confirmed this hypothesis.
