Ultra-served RHD BMW 850csi resurfaces on the Pebble Beach reserved

Under the Pacific breeze on the Pebble Beach, BMW quietly rolled out a piece of its hidden history. In addition to the Spotlight grabbing debut of the 2026 BMW M850i M Heritage Edition, there was a much rarer machine: a right drive drive 850csi, which was painted in the same lively bright red (known as light red uni in Germany). The BMW 8 series (E31) should always be more than a successor to the original 6 Series. It was a technological jump that was aimed at the Grand Touring Elite and offers a choice between V8 and V12 engines, the most modern aerodynamics and a futuristic driver interface. But it was the 850csi that was launched in the early nineties that put the 8 in really diluted air.

Officially, BMW never gave him an “M” badge – but under the 850csi was a motorsport product. The complete production version used a 5.6-liter S70B56 V12, which comes from the M70, but was revised by BMW M and produces 375 hp and 406 LB-FT torque. There was exclusively with a 6-speed manual, stiffened suspension, faster steering and all-wheel steering. His Vins even started with “WBS”, the signature of every real M car.

But the car on the Pebble Beach tells a slightly different story. While it was 850csi badge and many of the same motorsport optimizations, it was one of a handful of early production 850cSIs that were built especially for the British market. And under the bonnet it also had the M70 5.0-liter V12 with 296 hp and 332 LB-FT torque, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. This setup makes this car one of the most unusual members of the E31 family.

From 1992 to 1996, BMW built 1,510 850CSI models worldwide. Of these were only 160 right -hand drive, 153 with this configuration were officially assigned to Great Britain.

The decision to position this right drive 850csi in addition to the new 2026 BMW M850i M. Heritage Edition was no coincidence. The new car, which is limited to only 500 units worldwide, serves as a modern homage to the original 8 Series. It is offered in five historical colors, including the same bright red from the E31 in Pebble.
