Up to 6,000 euros for electric BMWs in 2026

The federal government has announced a new incentive program for electric vehicles that will provide funding of up to 6,000 euros for battery-electric vehicles and up to 4,500 euros for plug-in hybrids from 2026. The program, financed with 3 billion euros from the Climate and Transformation Fund, marks a significant change in the German direction of electromobility.

Income-based subsidy structure

Unlike previous programs, the 2026 subsidy provides for a social tier system based on household income. The maximum subsidy is reserved for lower income families and children. For a battery-electric vehicle, households with an annual taxable income of up to 45,000 euros and two or more children under 18 can receive the full 6,000 euros. The basic subsidy starts at 3,000 euros for BEVs and 1,500 euros for PHEVs; further amounts depend on the income class and the number of children.

The program limits the entitlement to taxable household income to 80,000 euros. However, this limit increases by 5,000 euros per child (up to two children) and can potentially reach 90,000 euros for families with two or more children. This income limit represents the average income of new car buyers in Germany, meaning around half of all private new car buyers could be eligible.

No price cap for vehicles

A notable change from previous funding programs is the lack of a maximum purchase price limit. This means that high-end BMW models such as the i7 M70 xDrive (from 182,400 euros) or the iX M70 could theoretically also be eligible for funding, provided the buyer meets the income requirements. This approach has drawn some criticism because it allows very expensive and powerful vehicles to receive taxpayer-funded incentives.

Requirements for plug-in hybrids

In order for plug-in hybrids to qualify, they must meet certain environmental criteria by June 30, 2027: either CO₂ emissions of a maximum of 60 g/km (type approval value) or a minimum electric range of at least 80 kilometers. This includes models such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e, 530e or the upcoming plug-in hybrid variants in the BMW range that meet these thresholds.

From July 1, 2027, the government plans to reassess the suitability of PHEVs based on real-world CO₂ emissions rather than type approval values, encouraging wider use of electric mode in daily driving.

Application process and schedule

To qualify, vehicles must be re-registered after January 1, 2026. Although applications will not be possible until around May 2026, the grant can be applied for retroactively up to one year from the vehicle’s registration date. This one-stage application process, requiring only post-registration documentation, represents a significant simplification compared to previous two-stage programs.

The required documents include copies of the purchase or leasing contract, the vehicle registration document and the two most recent tax returns (not older than three years). For faster processing, the government recommends using the online identification function of German identity cards.

Leasing customers included

Both buyers and tenants can benefit from the program, although the funding amount and requirements are identical. The leasing customer must be the registered owner of the vehicle and there is a minimum holding period of 36 months from the date of initial registration. The aim of this requirement is to prevent the immediate resale of subsidized vehicles for a profit.

Scope and duration of the program

The €3 billion budget is expected to support around 800,000 vehicles by 2029, depending on the claimed mix of BEVs and PHEVs. Currently, around 80 percent of the newly registered electric vehicles in Germany are produced in Europe, although the government is considering EU preferential rules that could be integrated into the program at a later date.

For BMW customers considering electric models, this represents a significant opportunity to reduce the cost of purchasing or leasing vehicles from the affordable iX1 to the flagship i7, provided income requirements are met.
