Ask any automaker if there’s room for another crossover in their lineup, and most will answer “yes.” It’s safe to say that BMW is a master at expanding its SUV portfolio. Just look at how many models have been added to the lineup since the original X5 (“E53”) was introduced in 1999. From the compact X1 to the gigantic X7, there is something for almost everyone. Even the iX and XM belong to the same family, although they have broken away from the traditional alphanumeric naming scheme.
Which brings us to today’s topic: What should BMW call a potential new “rugged” SUV? As the media has already reported, Munich is reportedly considering a high-seat model as a successor to the Mercedes G-Class and the Land Rover Defender. Since Audi also wants to get in on the action, the niche for adventurous family vehicles is getting bigger and bigger. When brought to life, this new SUV should go where no other BMW has gone before.
The rumor mill suggests that this addition to BMW’s “X” portfolio won’t just be a souped-up version of the next-generation X5 (“G65”) or X7 (“G67”). Automotive News reported that it has a separate codename, “G74.” It is a standalone product rather than off-road equipment for an existing model. Hopefully this indicates that the boxy style is making a comeback.

If history is any indication, BMW will likely stick with its familiar naming structure rather than choosing an actual name. Logic suggests that “X” is combined with another letter since Munich has already used up the numbers. Sure, it could fit “X8”. If you recall, this is a designation that was incorrectly associated with the XM before its debut. However, “X8” would only make sense if the newcomer was larger than the X7, but we don’t know if that’s necessarily the case.
Logic dictates that it must be larger, with seating for six or seven people. It also remains to be seen whether there will be a split tailgate similar to the X5, X7 and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. There’s also a chance that this new SUV won’t sit at the top of the “X” range, as BMW will likely keep that spot for the X7 and its future ALPINA variant. Instead, it could be a standalone model positioned alongside other outliers like the iX and the XM.
Possible names: XR, XA, XT, XS, XD, XF?
With this in mind, BMW could combine “X” with another letter. Early reports suggest the project is being referred to internally as “Rugged,” so perhaps “XR” would fit? Some may associate it with Apple’s discontinued iPhone
Since it’s designed as an adventure vehicle, “XA” could work too. Other options include “XT” (Trail or Terrain), “XS” (Summit), “XD” (Discovery) or even “XF” (Frontier). The latter is a name reminiscent of Jaguar’s defunct 5-series sedan.
It’s currently unclear whether the company has narrowed down its shortlist or perhaps even chosen the final name. Or even fully approved this rumored project. However, since product planning starts years in advance and naming is no small matter, they may already have some ideas in mind. The XM has raised more than a few eyebrows, so BMW needs to tread carefully when branding its next bold SUV.
Automotive News reported that BMW will build the new SUV in Spartanburg. Given the company’s commitment to build at least six electric SUVs in South Carolina by 2030, that’s not too much of a guess. This means there could be both internal combustion engine and electrified versions, as the CLAR architecture can support both.
Please let us know in the comments what you would call a BMW that wants to hit the off-road trail like never before.
