You can buy the M3 E36 Touring that BMW never made

BMW waited until 2022 to give wagon enthusiasts an M3 Touring with the introduction of the G81. Sure, in 2000, during the E46 generation, there was an M3 with a long roof. However, this was an internal project that was never intended for sale. What if we told you there was an M3 E36 Touring out there? Although it wasn’t actually built by BMW, it’s a convincing aftermarket conversion.

This 1996 3 Series wagon began life as a regular 320i before receiving a complete M3 makeover. Not only does it have the “S50” engine of a proper second-generation M3, but it also adopts the exhaust and brakes. The redesign included a limited-slip differential as well as wheels, bumpers and side skirts sourced from a full-fat M3. To complete the illusion, the interior was equipped with original parts from the E36 M3. All in all, it looks like BMW built it this way from the start.

Dutch seller Premium classic claims the vehicle is actually registered as an M3 Touring. To make it even more convincing, small details such as mirrors and trim parts were also taken from the original. Originally delivered to a customer in Germany, the car has since been repainted, bringing the Boston Green Metallic color back to a high shine, including on the steel sunroof.

This unique M3 Touring E36 has covered 159,217 kilometers (98,933 miles) and is now looking for a new home. The price is 50,000 euros (US$58,500), which certainly doesn’t make it cheap. On the other hand, it is a true unicorn and appears to be in perfect condition. It feels just as special as the 1996 M3 Compact E36, a car that BMW built itself back then but unfortunately never sold.

In hindsight, this is probably the type of car BMW should have built. It’s reminiscent of a time when SUVs didn’t dominate the brand’s offering. In fact, the Still, perhaps we should see that the glass is half full. In 2025, the M3 Touring will be available alongside the M5 Touring, although the former remains forbidden fruit in North America.
