Volkswagen has been spotted testing an updated version of the ID.3, the compact hatch whose launch in 2019 marked the arrival of the VW ID family of electric vehicles.

The updated ID.3 is confirmed for a spring debut, and while it’s not expected to join VW’s US lineup, its updates may eventually spill over to other ID models sold here.

The visual adjustments will be minimal. The prototype has a new front fascia, and we know from teaser sketches that the interior will feature a revised dashboard with a larger infotainment screen, measuring 12.0 inches versus the current model’s 10.0 inches.

VW has also confirmed higher-quality materials for the cabin, improved driver-assistance technology, and a new software backend that will support over-the-air updates. The center console will also feature a revised design with dual cup holders, and the cargo area will get a removable floor.

Depending on the market, the ID.3 is currently offered with 45, 58 or 77 kWh battery options and a single motor at the rear with 205 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque.

It’s not clear if changes will be made to the standard model, but there are rumors that a new twin-engine all-wheel drive ID.3 GTX will be part of the updated range.

It is known that the Volkswagen Group is preparing an updated version of the ID.3’s MEB platform, but this newer platform will not make it into the updated ID.3. The updated platform, dubbed MEB+, will accept VW Group’s next-generation battery cell design and introduce higher charging rates.

While the updated ID.3 won’t be sold in the US, VW has brought some new ID models here shortly. These include the ID.Buzz minivan and a new ID.7 sedan.
