Volvo is about to unveiled the ES90, an electric medium -sized sedan that will introduce several new technologies for the Swedish brand.
One of them is an 800-volt technology with which the ES90 can be charged faster than all previous Volvo-EV rates of up to 350 kW and at the same time improve loading efficiency. This standard is already used by several other car manufacturers, including Audi, Hyundai, Kia, Porsche and Volkswagen.
The EX90 Electric Midsize SUV, which was on sale last year, shares the same SPA2 -dedized EV platform as the ES90. However, it has a 400-volt-electric system. Volvo has designed every component in the ES90 electrical system in such a way that they are operated 800 volts, including the battery cells, engines (also easier), inverter, charging and heat control systems.
This means that it is unlikely that the system will be retrofitted to EX90S. However, this is not the case for the Dual Nvidia Drive Agx Orin Chips of the ES90, which, according to Volvo, is offered as an inexpensive upgrade for existing EX90 owners.

The new 800-volt system, which is linked to the latest battery management system from Volvo, enables the ES90 to add about 186 miles in just 10 minutes if a suitable DC fast charger is used. According to Volvo, a fee of 10-80% can also be completed in just 20 minutes.
In comparison, the EX90 only adds 112 miles in 10 minutes and takes 30 minutes to charge 10 to 80%. These area estimates are based on the WLTP test cycle used overseas and would result in lower numbers under the stricter EPA test cycle.

The faster charging is mainly due to reduced heat generation in the battery at 800 volts compared to 400 volts.
Volvo has not announced the battery size of the ES90, but the EX90 has a 111 kWh unit.

The ES90 is scheduled to be presented on March 5 at an event in Stockholm. If it is approved for the US sale, it will probably arrive as a model in 2026.
The ES90 is just one of five new or updated Volvo models that start this year. At the beginning of February, Volvo unveiled the robust ex30 Cross Country and an updated XC60. Additional expected models include an updated S60 compact sedan and a long-distance plug-in hybrid tailored to the Chinese market. The current S60 will leave the US market after 2025 and is not expected to return. Volvo has not yet announced the US start -timing for these new models.
