With the introduction of the 2026 BMW IX3, the SUV, which is based on the revolutionary new NEE class architecture from BMW, is created a lot of new technologies. Between the wild new panorama exhibition, the lack of a traditional measuring device and a greatly increased area, it almost requires a complete new configuration about how to think about driving a BMW. But in a way, the iDrive X of BMW remains very familiar. For this purpose, there are restrictions that the technical-technical drivers may not be happy about.
Idrive X and Panorama display have limits of the app integration

Already in July with an exclusive demo of the new class and iDrive X, we asked a BMW representative whether Waze is displayed in the panoram and/or head-up display. We have learned that we would not see complete integration due to the treatment of data exchange with vehicles. According to the representative, it has to do with what Apple devices can send to elsewhere with metadata. As in current BMW vehicles, new class can “read” data from things from things like Apple Maps and media information. But at least for the time being – that’s all you get, what you get. Or we should say that that’s all you get in the head-up displays.
Apple CarPlay is still fully functional and shows everything you want/need on the middle screen. However, this means that other frequently used non-Apple apps thinking about Google MAPS also incompatible with the panoramic processes. In practice, this means either changing your preferred assignment/media app or simply putting other useful information on these points on the display.
No Apple CarPlay Ultra also planned

However, it is repeated: BMW is not ready to jeopardize the car control as Apple requires so that Apple CarPlay Ultra works. An exact quote from a BMW spokesman: “BMW currently has no plans to integrate Apple CarPlay Ultra.” Between the configurability and the convenience of the panoramic view and the usability of the center display, we are skeptical that BMW drivers are missing a lot with the omission of CarPlay Ultra. As a memory, CarPlay is still regularly supported and updated. Ultra does not replace it.
Overall, the 2026 BMW IX3 is a big leap forward in technology and design. While IDRIVE X and the Panorama Vision Display bring an unprecedented comfort and adaptation, there are still restrictions on the app integration of apps and Apple Carplay Ultra. For most drivers, it is unlikely that these restrictions will be a dealbreaker, since the core functionality is more than outputs what is missing.
