2026 MINI Cooper gets subtle updates, Oxford Edition returns

The latest generation of MINI Cooper debuted just last year, so it would be normal for MINI to come out on top. However, the brand is bringing some small improvements to the Cooper, although mainly of an aesthetic nature. Most importantly, the 2026 MINI Cooper is still available in the value-priced Oxford Edition trim level, albeit in limited numbers. If you choose an Oxford Edition, you’ll save around $4,000 off the base MSRP without sacrificing any amenities. Elsewhere, MINI adds a $1,200 John Cooper Works Style package for Cooper S models. New mirror cap and roof color options are also being added to the catalog, allowing the Cooper to be customized a little more. Finally, most models will be upgraded to MINI Digital Key Plus. Upon delivery, new owners will receive a single key fob and two additional key cards instead of two key fobs. Otherwise, the 2026 MINI Cooper is unchanged from the previous year.

2026 MINI Cooper engine, transmission and performance

The entry-level MINI Cooper C is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 161 hp and 184 Nm of torque. Stepping up to the Cooper S brings a significant increase to 201 horsepower and 221 pound-feet. These numbers may seem modest on paper, but they result in noticeably better performance. As a two-door, the Cooper S shaves more than a second off the standard car’s estimated sprint to 60 mph, improving from 7.4 seconds to a far more competitive 6.3 seconds.

For buyers looking for something more sophisticated, both the coupe and convertible are offered in John Cooper Works trim. JCW models squeeze 221 horsepower out of the same base engine, resulting in a gradual but worthwhile increase in straight-line speed. The JCW coupe is estimated to reach 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, while the convertible is close behind at 6.2 seconds. Beyond performance, JCW trims are distinguished by specific exterior details, including unique wheel designs and contrasting brake calipers. The newly available JCW Style package reproduces much of the visual styling without a more powerful powertrain. Every 2026 MINI Cooper uses BMW’s 2.0-liter B48 four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is a purely front-wheel drive vehicle; a manual transmission is not available.

2026 MINI Cooper Fuel Economy and MPG

Fuel economy figures vary depending on body style and powertrain. However, almost all versions of the 2026 MINI Cooper achieve approximately the same rating. According to EPA testing, the two-door and four-door Cooper C and Cooper S models achieved a combined 32 mpg, while the convertible and JCW models combined remained consistent at 30 mpg. The MINI Cooper has an 11.6-gallon fuel tank.

Interior and cargo space

Power seats are still an optional extra on the 2026 MINI Cooper and now cost $1,250 (up from $1,000 last year). Not a big deal if you accept the ethos of the brand. All cars feature vescine (synthetic leather) and cloth upholstery, with no leather option. A $1,100 Convenience Package for the base vehicles adds “Comfort Access” keyless entry and cell phone charging, but the Signature Plus trim includes this and adds a few other extras that make it worth checking off. Heated seats are also standard equipment, as is a panoramic sunroof.

As expected, the MINI Cooper’s trunk is not its strong point. Four-door models have 13.1 cubic feet, while coupes have to make do with 8.9 cubic feet. Convertibles, on the other hand, come in at a meager 7.6 cubic feet. Height aside, the Cooper’s tiny trunk is still somewhat usable. For reference, the 2026 BMW 2 Series Coupe has 10 cubic feet of trunk space. Regularly transporting larger items could require a larger MINI Countryman.

2026 MINI Cooper technology and connectivity

The Cooper’s personality-packed interior remains eminently usable as long as you prefer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Everything is displayed on a round OLED display in the center of the cabin. Standard features like over-the-air updates and navigation give even a basic MINI a very modern feel. There are also plenty of tech options available, ranging from augmented reality features to an inward-facing camera. Here too, the Signature Plus equipment is the deciding factor, as it offers remote engine start, driving assistance functions and an alarm system.

Safety and driver assistance functions

The MINI Cooper 2026’s standard driver assistance features include collision protection, lane departure warning, left turn warning and speed limit assistant. MINI also comes with eCall, along with front and rear parking sensors and Parking Assist. Admittedly, the latter may be unnecessary given the car’s small footprint. For those who wish, a surround-view camera system and adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go are available. But foregoing these extras keeps the price under control and maintains the Cooper’s overall value proposition.

Prices for the MINI Cooper 2026

2025 Mini Oxford Edition debut with 4000 US dollar price

The prices for the MINI Cooper increase every year. The 2026 MINI Cooper 2-Door is the cheapest, now priced at $29,500 instead of $28,950. Four-door models start at $30,500 and convertible models start at $34,600. We can’t talk about price without briefly diving into the Oxford Edition. The value-conscious option starts at just $25,500 for the two-door model, with an additional $1,000 required for 4-door models. It’s also anything but a penalty box, features good-looking 18-inch wheels, and comes in three decent colors (white, yellow, blue; pictured above in blue). In addition, the Oxford Edition has probably the most important standard functions. This list includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a sunroof and LED headlights. It’s the first choice if price is even remotely an issue.

2026 MINI Cooper: Our opinion

MINI COOPER C JAPAN 02

The higher the price levels, the more doubtful the value of the MINI Cooper becomes. Nearly $40,000 for a JCW Cooper feels high; In contrast, with the Oxford Edition my eyes are staring at the empty garage space. But the MINI Cooper still exists in something of a niche, especially when it’s priced right. Real hot hatches like the Golf R and GR Corolla are still a lot more expensive than even the JCW Cooper. On our first drive we thought the JCW was definitely a more measured car than its rivals and its predecessors. But that’s partly a good thing. And for the $30,000 or $33,000 mark, you probably won’t find a more fun new front-drive car. It’s a bit of a balancing act, but the MINI Cooper can still be a good buy in 2026.
