With the 3.0 CSL already sitting pretty in the garage, it’s hard to find another modern model worth parking next to the Batmobile tribute. However, Bob Suzuki may have found just the right car to complement the most expensive new BMW model ever. At an estimated 500,000 euros, the Speedtop is far cheaper than the retro-style M4 CSL. Of course, we use the term “attainable” loosely. But the half-million-euro M8 station wagon is significantly less than the 750,000-euro special model built to mark M’s 50th anniversary.
The owner of tuning house Studie AG took to social media to announce his next acquisition. The mastermind of the BMW Study racing team is expanding his growing collection to include the Speedtop. Although the car is expected to be used primarily in its home country of Japan, the M8-based Shooting Brake will be built in German specification with left-hand drive. Likewise, the previously mentioned 3.0 CSL is also left-hand drive, although BMW also offered the 50 models with a right-hand drive layout.
With 70 units planned, the Speedtop won’t be that rare. The dedicated BMW special projects team is currently busy assembling the station wagon’s Targa sister model, the Skytop. The open variant will be on par with the 3.0 CSL in terms of exclusivity, as only 50 examples will be produced. We hear the two-door wagon won’t go into production until late 2026.
It’s interesting how BMW shows the Speedtop here in Skytop’s Floating Sundown Silver paint instead of Floating Sunstone Maroon. On the real car, the reddish-brown tone is paired with Floating Sundown Silver just for the roof color gradient. There is likely an error in the configurator/visualizer, as the actual vehicles will receive the concept’s Floating Sunstone Maroon, as seen back in May at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
Attentive readers will also notice another mishap: the red-brown leather upholstery is borrowed from the Skytop. However, the Speedtop has a different interior with a two-tone paint finish. In both cases, the interior is largely taken over from the M8, but the cars are only available as two-seaters. Yes, even the station wagon foregoes the rear seats to make room for two custom-made bags.
Under the hood is BMW’s currently most powerful V8, the S63 in S63B44T4 specification. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine produces 617 hp, matching the M8. Only the M5 CS offered more with 627 hp.
We’ve also learned that another Speedtop is heading to America to a BMW collector, but that owner prefers to keep things a secret, at least for now. BMW is not looking for buyers as all the cars were pre-sold shortly after debuting on the shores of Lake Como.
