Writing has been on the wall for some time. We have been reporting on the gradual death of the 8s for some time. The M8 Coupé has already left the US market, and in Europe all diesel versions of the 8er seem to be outside on the way. A well-placed BMW insider, known for a strong track record on the Bimmer Post Forums report that the diesel 8 series will soon be stopped.
The 840d XDRIVE, which is offered in Coupé, Cabrio and Gran Coupé variants, is said to end production earlier than expected. BMW plans to put together the final cars with B57 vehicles in September. From then on, the 8 Series will only be available with six and eight-cylinder petrol engines, but even these will not stay much longer.
The G15 Coupé, the Cabrio G14 and the G16 Gran Coupé are expected to end production in the Dingolfing plant in April 2026. Your M colleagues, F92, F91 and F93, could retire earlier, possibly already in autumn. BMW has already informed us that a direct replacement for the M8 is not in development. Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President of customers, brand and sale at BMW M, indicated something new:

“It is something on the horizon that I probably can’t talk about. Introducing a new concept into a market is always a bit of risk. There is a very specific project on the horizon that we are currently working on. I think it could be very appealing for many markets in the world.”
In the meantime, one could argue that BMW has already given the 8 Series to say goodbye. The last year Skytop and the new Speedtop are beautiful Targa and the rotating interpretations in the brake style of the M8. It is unclear whether an official 8th party is in the works, but we would not rely on it.
Together with the Z4, the 8er remains one of the last holds of BMW’s “Old Guard”. But the compact roadster also approaches the end of his street. The German luxury brand plans to retire the sports car for Folding roof somewhere in 2026.
