Don’t worry, BMW will avoid making all of your cars look the same

Even if you don’t have a fan of BMW’s design, new class or what came before, you have to give a loan where it is due. There is a significant variety of model lines. Sure, the 1 -series and 2 Series -Gran CoupĂ© look almost identical, but this is because you are essentially the same car: one with a hatch, the other with a trunk. Overall, however, BMW kept the copy/paste approach away. Fortunately, the Russian doll strategy will also be expressed with the upcoming product.

BMW plans to launch more than 40 new or updated cars by the end of 2027. According to the company’s head of design, each model has “very different functions and properties”. Adrian van Hoydonk told Autocar The NEE class styling is used in the entire area and avoids the simple street of the strategy “same sausage, different lengths”.

This is the promise of the BMW design manager: “We want to give each of our products their own character.” Van Hoydonk spoke especially about M models and said the performance vehicles will use a “more expressive” look. The avant-garde i8-plug-in-hybrid sports car serves as an inspiration for the design team, so that M products should continue to look daring.

Nevertheless, new class sounds the things with smoother surfaces and creates an interesting balance between expressive and more restrictive designs. The first actual M model is the electrical M3 (ZA0) in 2027, which a year later followed by its Benzingeschwister (G84). It is expected that petrol and electrical models in the same family are almost identical. At the beginning of this year, Van Hooydonk found that it would be difficult to distinguish them, at least from a distance.

His promise gives us hope that X5 will be more next year than just the big brother of the IX3. Spy photos already show the second generation X7, which maintains its split headlight design and immediately distinguishes it from smaller SUVs. It will be interesting to see how new class design cues are integrated into existing models, such as:

Managing such a huge portfolio is not an easy task. It is particularly true when fresh design elements are introduced in such a short time over almost all cars. Despite the steady expansion of the family, there is still space for more. Although it is not officially confirmed, a robust SUV code name G74 should arrive in 2029.

Nevertheless, several models will bow in the meantime. The Z4 and 8 series are almost confirmed that they end in 2026. In view of the planned electrical IX5, one IX of the next generation looks unlikely, while the probability of another XM or a 2-person tourer are slim until none. Even the 4 series may not return with combustion engines. However, BMW could replace it with an i4 coupé and maybe even with a convertible.
