The BMW E46 3 series has received a lot of praise over the years, from journalists to forum members and everyone in between. But over twenty years after the debut of the car: Is it still worth getting to the wheel? As with many aging BMWs, most E46 are far beyond their first or second owners. But whether worse for wear or cared for, the E46 has a lot to love. Still worth your time and money in 2025?
Advantages: value, steering, appearance

In contrast to the BMW E36, the BMW E46 3 series is still a good value in 2025. BMW sold so many of these things that there is no lack of good, okay and beaten. So it is easy to buy at your price and get something that works for your needs. Even E46 ZHP cars – which are probably the perfect middle ground – can be performed at a reasonable price. With four body styles, including one car, it is almost guaranteed an E46 that checks all the boxes. Small restriction: When considering examples with a high dollar and low mile E46 M3, the value becomes a lot of personal discussion.
This excellent value comes due to the fact that the E46 is simply wonderful to drive. As with the E36, the limit for these cars is low, especially if there is no M badge on the back of your E46. But the steering is pretty good – probably better than the E36 – precision with excellent feeling. And at least when it comes to the M3 (and I assume ZHP cars), electricity is more than sufficient, if not according to modern standards. Although it is subjective, it is difficult to find someone who doesn’t believe that the E46 is a pretty good -looking car. An intelligent -looking car that drives as well as it looks? It seems as if it were difficult to go wrong with an E46.
Disadvantages: power, technology, affordability

You don’t need much strength to have a good time, but it helps. Most versions of the BMW E46 3 Series are around 200 hp, outlier on both ends. The M3 is of course negatively excluded from this, since 333 hp still feels quickly. Like the E36, the E46 has a rather outdated technology. Also here – hardly necessary if you prioritize the driving dynamics, but may still be a bit disappointing for people who use the E46 as the only car 2025.
While buying an E46 is quite affordable nowadays, the people who buy a rough purchase without a certain tendency to DIY or a good euro mechanic can buy speed capital capital, possibly costs for the car’s car quickly. In my experience, E46s have always been a bit more maintenance -intensive than E36 (and even many E90). Thankfully are available, but a needy E46 – especially an M3 – can become a resource outflow than it is quickly worth. And I mean that literally.
E46 reliability in 2025

The E46 3 series is a little together with general affordability and is about as reliable as any BMW from the early 2000s, ie it is a mixed bag. The E46 M3 in particular has to be tackled “The Big Three” before the purchase even takes place. The Big Three refers to pole bearings, reinforcement of the subframe and vanos. The latter can practically fail out of nowhere; The first two have warning signs, but require a learned eye. Non-M E46S have less headache, but there is still Tons From small things (and big things) that can go wrong. Fortunately, these cars are quite DIY-friendly. Another point in favor of the E46: BMW made one and a half wishes of these things. So parts are not exactly difficult to find. In 2025, however, there is a pretty solid chance that every E46 you pick up needs something.
Judgment: Do you buy an E46 in 2025?
Oh yes, absolutely. The E46 3 Series is still one of the best ways to get into the brand and one of the best bang cars on the street today. Another very cool thing about E46S in the USA is that BMW only offered them a six -cylinder. The search for a good thing is only a little easier. Why are you still reading? Start shopping and experience a car that will always put a smile on the face of an enthusiast. From, um, do not pay attention to the E46 compact.
