BMW surprised everyone when it brought a prototype of the M5 facelift to Arjeplog, Sweden, for winter tests. The disguised LCI was first seen in mid-February, only months after the start of the G90 deliveries worldwide. The updated Super sedan from Bayern with a new class design features will only be released in 2027. In the meantime, the action thickens.
During the latest industry pool in the Nürburgring, a crappy M5 was caught walking. The story becomes really interesting here because the test vehicle clearly did not have the newly designed front fascia. If we are not missing something, the prototype looks practically identical to the G90, which can be found at dealers today. Nevertheless, we do not rule out changes that could hide under the camouflage.

What could test BMW? The only logical explanation we can imagine is a hotter M5 -CS version. Even if it does not have the body of the written version, it can contain some hardware upgrades under the familiar skin. Competition sport or not, we will unlikely to see a G90 derivative before the LCI comes out in a few years. According to reports, the updated version reports to production in February 2027.
Suppose it is not necessarily M5-related, BMW may work on updates for plug-in hybrid drive train. The only other car that uses the electrified S68 setup is the XM, but it is possible that the strong PHEV will move to other products. Anyway, we certainly didn’t see the last twin turbo 4.4-liter engine with the eight-speed automatic transmission with an electric motor.
For the latest test session in the Green Hell, BMW brought a prototype of the US SPEC M5, which judge according to the orange side markings. We cannot see the interior properly, but the car clearly lacks the revised dashboard. When iDrive X arrives with the facelifting, there is a large center touchscreen and no instrument cluster. This G90 has the usual side-by-side screen setup, which can be found on models with iDrive 8/8.5 and 9.
We will keep an eye on BMW because it is clearly something. At the moment the spy video is raising more questions than answers.
