Next-generation BMW 3 Series comes onto the market with updated B48TÜ3 engine

The next-generation BMW 3 Series is in the middle of development, and as we get closer to the start of production in November 2026, more pieces of the puzzle are coming together. Aside from the Neue Klasse-inspired design and high-tech interior, the biggest news concerns the engine family that powers the petrol and plug-in hybrid models. According to insiders, BMW is preparing to introduce the B48TÜ3, the latest evolution of its 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that will serve as the backbone of the 320, 330 and 330e. At the top of the model range is a revised six-cylinder: the B58TÜ3.

We have already reported on the debut of the B58TÜ3 next July in the G70 7 Series LCI – in the 735 with 286 hp and 295 lb-ft and in the 740 with even 400 hp and 400 lb-ft. It’s now clear that the same generation of engines will eventually power the M340i’s replacement: the upcoming BMW M350.

But before we get there, here’s everything we know so far about the G50 3 Series and the engines that will define it.

A closer look at the G50 prototypes

When we published the first spy images in 2025, the prototype in question gave us a first glimpse of the exterior design. Even with the familiar swirling camouflage, the influence of the New Class is impossible to miss. The wider, more horizontal kidney grille flows into slimmer headlights and is reminiscent of the Vision Neue Klasse concept and the upcoming BMW i3. These headlights may still be prototypes, but the overall shape is expected to go into production unchanged.

The hood is long enough to keep options open for six-cylinder models, consistent with BMW’s confirmation that the next-generation M3 will continue with an inline-six configuration. Flush door handles run along the sides and a cleaner finish, indicating BMW’s trend towards simpler shapes.

At the rear, makeshift taillights hide most of the detail, but the general proportions suggest a slightly more refined look with thinner light signatures. A discreetly integrated spoiler extends from the trunk lid. As BMW pushes for cleaner, more minimalist designs, the days of exposed exhaust pipes are fading – only M Performance and M models retain visible ends.

Gas and electricity will look almost identical

The all-electric i3 (NA0) will have the same overall shape as its G50 petrol counterpart, apart from a significantly shorter front overhang. Adrian van Hooydonk told us earlier this year that it will become increasingly difficult to distinguish ICE models from EV models. The main difference will be the length of the nose – special electric vehicles simply do not need space for a motor.

BMW plans for both the G50 3 Series and NA0 i3 to enter production simultaneously in November 2026. The i3 has already been confirmed for Munich, but the next 3 Series sedan will almost certainly head to Dingolfing, with the NA1 electric wagon following shortly after in Munich.
