The BMW 7 Series facelift could get a more powerful B58 engine

The seventh 7 will receive a mid-cycle facelift in 2026, giving the Munich top model a dose of Neue Klasse mojo. Spy shots suggest that despite the new design introduced with the iX3, the design changes won’t be as dramatic as expected. The massive kidney grille remains, as do the polarizing split headlights.

While the exterior will subtly evolve, the interior is poised for a revolution. BMW will equip the “G70” with its new iDrive X infotainment system as well as the Panoramic Vision of the iX3. This is essentially a pillar-to-pillar projection at the bottom of the windshield that replaces the traditional instrument cluster. It extends to the other side of the dashboard, making it visible and adjustable from the passenger side.

We’re now hearing that updates will also happen beneath the surface. Specifically, it is expected that the B58 engine will evolve into an improved variant with up to 400 hp. According to a Bimmer post Forum member familiar with BMW’s plans, the 740 will adopt the B58TÜ3 version of the inline-six. If true, that’s notable considering models like the M240i, M340i and M440i have only recently switched to the B58TÜ2 specification.

Like all petrol versions, the 740i successor will drop the “i” from its name. If the 400 hp figure holds true, that will be an increase of 25 hp over the previous model. Torque is also expected to increase by 17 lb-ft (23 Nm) to 400 lb-ft (542 Nm). However, it would not be the most powerful B58 to date. Toyota’s Supra A90 Final Edition is still at the top with 429 hp.

BMW could close this gap with the next generation of the 3 Series, particularly the upcoming M340i successor. The model with the M350 badge is said to produce 417 hp. Meanwhile, the B58TÜ3 will also power a second LCI variant of the 7 Series, the entry-level 735 with 286 hp. BMW already sells a 735i in select markets, including Singapore.

Production of the updated 7 Series is scheduled to begin in July 2026 and will initially include the 735, 740, 740 xDrive, i7 50 xDrive, i7 60 xDrive and i7 M70 xDrive models. The 740d xDrive as well as the M760e xDrive and the 750e xDrive with B58 drive will also be available in November. Interestingly, the V8-powered 760 may not be available in the US until 2027, if at all, according to the insider.

In addition to the BMW models, ALPINA will offer three “G72” variants: the 740 xDrive, the 760 xDrive and the i7 70 xDrive. These are fully equipped derivatives with exclusive ALPINA styling changes inside and out.
