Everyone was disappointed when we broke the news that the coupé would not go into production with the Touring concept. Based on the Z4 M40i, the revival of the “clown shoe” had amazed the amount of the 2023 Concorso d’Elanza Villa d’Este. Reports about a potential limited run for customers appeared, but it never ended. Now everything is forgiven. Two years later, a new shooting brake adorns the banks of Lake Como in Italy. This time it is more than just a one -off.
The speedtop builds on an already special car: the skytop. The BMW deleted the removable Targapaneel to install a fixed roof, which halves from a prominent central ridge. Similar to the convertible of last year, the follow-up car uses a color gradient to achieve an even greater visual effect. The new roof changes from the floating sunset caroon to floating sunset. It is immediately obvious that the designers kept some of the best elements of the Skytop, such as the shark nose and slim headlights. But the body is completely new from the A-pillars.
The gently sloping roof line ends with a reasonably large spoiler on the tailgate and replaces the less practical trunk of the skytop. These special BMWs are also the first to eliminate conventional door handles. You would no longer expect you to integrate them into the door after the designers and engineers. Tiny Winglets, which are completed here in Chrome to meet the Beltline, will appear in future series production models. We believe that the next X5 (G65) will be shown in 2026, followed by X7 (G67). Prototypes of both SUVs have already been discovered with the small winglets on all doors.
The profile is probably the best angle of the speedtop, which shows in simplicity true beauty, without the excessive wrinkles that often overloaded modern designs. Instead of recycling the wheels of the skytop, BMW designed a new two-tone set with a 14-spoke layout especially for the speedtop. Thanks to a large glass pane at the back of the doors, visibility has probably improved on the outside.
The rear highlights, how impressive the fenders are. The Speedtop has the slimest taillights that have ever been installed in a series production car and further differs from the M8 with double oval exhaust tips. The exhaust system is connected to the most powerful V8 from BMW. So expect that the 4.4-liter engine from Twin-Turbo will be produced over 600 hp. There are no mild hybrid tricks here. This is a pure internal combustion car.
You may not immediately recognize that it is based on the M8 until you enter. The upscale cabin is immediately familiar and is now completed in a more luxurious two -tone leather that extends into the loading room. BMW repeated the roof ridge of the outer with illuminated stripes that divide the headliner into two parts. Another light tape surrounds the luggage compartment.
Although the speed top is much larger than the coupé touring with the concept, it remains exclusively a two-seater matter. Two storage compartments with leather straps replace the rear seats that secure a few tailor -made bags. BMW hid a third bag under the loading floor to make the shooting brake a practical companion for longer trips.
The speedtop is a little less exclusive than its Targa predecessor. BMW produces 70 units or 20 more than the skytop. The convertible has long been sold out, but you can still get the shooting brake into your hands. That has allowed her bank account. BMW has not announced prices, but we can certainly assume that it exceeds the 185,400 euro sticker of the M8 Coupé in Germany. After all, beautiful is at costs.
We can experience the last hurray for the M8. BMW gradually exhibits the 8s before production in 2026. The M8 coupé in the USA has already stopped. Talk about going out with a bang. BMW will retire the Z4 next year, and it is a real shame that the coupé with the concept that it never made for production. Nevertheless, there is hope that the managers in Munich could develop both in the skytop and in the speedtop into both future once to limited production cars.
