The facelift of the BMW 5 Series seems less inspired by the Neue Klasse than early prototypes

When BMW’s first 5 Series prototypes appeared earlier this year, seemingly wearing a full Neue Klasse face, the message seemed clear: the brand’s next design language would spread quickly. The spy shots showed a sedan that appeared to be heavily based on the iX3, suggesting a more unified, future-focused lineup. But the latest prototypes tell a different story. New images suggest that BMW has quietly revised its plans, dialing back the more radical elements and opting for a far more understated facelift for the 5 Series than originally expected.

We heard earlier this year that BMW may have done this covered the styling of the sedan. In May we reported that the G60 facelift wouldn’t be as radical as the spy photos originally suggested. New images now actually confirm our earlier report that the 2027 BMW 5 Series will skip a complete Neue Klasse transformation.

An evolution in design

Seen here is the more practical Touring, sitting on a car trailer next to the new iX3. Despite the full-body camouflage, it’s clear that this prototype doesn’t match the one spotted a few months ago. The front grill no longer flows into the headlights like it did in the previous test car. Instead, BMW seems to have opted for a more reserved facelift of the current model.

Although the 5 Series will not receive the originally planned complete redesign of the New Class, there are still noticeable design changes. The mid-cycle update brings flatter kidney grilles flanked by redesigned headlights. These new, also flatter lights no longer appear to protrude upwards to the corners of the hood. A revised front bumper with a horizontal bar above the license plate suggests that this prototype is equipped with the optional M Sport package.

Since this is just a facelift, the profile is likely to carry over unchanged. The shape and size of the taillights also appear to have been retained. However, BMW may rework the internal graphics to freshen up the rear. The prototype’s German license plate ends with an “E,” suggesting it’s either a plug-in hybrid 5 Series or, more likely, an all-electric i5.

However, we have to clarify one thing: BMW has not officially confirmed any changes to the 5 Series facelift design and the company is not commenting on further developments.

The original redesign was reportedly not well received

Why is BMW revising the 5 Series facelift in 2027? According to our sources, the company continued to evaluate multiple design directions for the mid-cycle update well into the development process. As part of this work, BMW conducted design reviews and customer surveys on various exterior proposals, something the brand routinely does before settling on a final look. Apparently, external agencies also carry out research for the brand and not only collect opinions from across the internet. So it could be that these studies showed a higher value for a milder facelift, which is more in line with the current model.

As a result, the design team went back to the drawing board and developed this revised facelift, which is why these new prototypes look completely different. In a way, it’s encouraging that BMW listens very carefully to customer and user feedback, but at the same time the processes are much leaner these days to allow for a quick transition to a new design direction.

There could also be a financial factor at play. It’s not far-fetched to assume that BMW will give the 5 Series Sedan and Touring one of the most expensive facelifts in its history. While the cars miss out on the Neue Klasse exterior treatment, BMW will still deliver a dramatically revised interior. iDrive In summary, these changes require a complete redesign of the interior design, from the structure of the dashboard to the arrangement of space and components.

Prohibitive costs were also a factor

The originally planned external overhaul would have increased costs even further, making a mid-cycle update difficult to justify. This level of investment would have made more sense for a completely new car. By sticking with the G60 and long-roof G61, BMW could also retain space for Gen5-like batteries, meaning the i5 will have to wait until the next generation to benefit from higher energy density round cells. Nevertheless, the upcoming facelift could provide a boost in reach through further partnerships.

The facelift of the 5 Series 2027 is still a long way off. Production is rumored to begin in July 2027, making the official debut still more than a year away. The G90 M5 Sedan and G99 M5 Touring are expected to get the same treatment down the road, foregoing a Neue Klasse exterior overhaul and instead adopting the new interior technology first seen on the iX3.
