The BMW 4 Series received an official refresh last year. Therefore, it is not surprising that the car is largely carried over for the next model year. However, there are small packaging changes that could make a small difference for those ordering a 2026 BMW 4 Series. Overall, the redesigned BMW 4 Series marches into 2026 largely as it always was: a flexible lifestyle choice for people who are bored with standard sedans (read: the 3 Series). However, unlike some other models, the 4 Series gets a little more expensive every year.
2026 BMW 4 Series engine, transmission and performance

The 2026 BMW 4 Series remains one of the most versatile cars in BMW’s lineup. In addition to the three different body variants, there are two different engines and rear or all-wheel drive. Four-cylinder models get the ā430iā badge and make do with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The big brother M440i meanwhile swaps a four-pot engine for the well-known B58 engine. The turbocharged inline-six in this version produces 386 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, the fastest of the B58 vehicles can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just under 4.2 seconds. Each version of the 2026 BMW 4 Series offers adequate performance. But we will choose the classic inline-six formula every time.
2026 BMW 4 Series Fuel Economy and MPG

Like last year, the 2026 BMW 4 Series is most efficient in coupe form. The 430i Coupe offers the best EPA-estimated fuel economy for the model, offering 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, for a total of 31 mpg. Convertible and Gran Coupe models only dropped 1 mpg overall. The BMW M440i is an easy sell considering it has almost the same fuel economy despite having two extra cylinders and a lot more horsepower. The M440i Coupe achieves 30 mpg overall: 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
Interior and cargo space

There are no major changes inside for the 2026 BMW 4 Series, but there are tweaks. Glass Controls are available now for $650. There’s also a small packaging change that makes the Convenience Package a slightly cheaper buy this year: the power tailgate is now part of it. Previously you needed the Premium package; Or add it as a standalone option. Either way, the $600 package is now an easy recommendation for four-cylinder cars; It is standard equipment on the M440i. SensaTec upholstery is standard on the 4 Series; We’d probably pass up the $1,500 leather option. The 4 Series Gran Coupe remains the king of cargo space thanks to its liftback trunk. The Gran Coupe also offers slightly more shoulder room in the rear as well as head and leg room throughout.
2026 BMW 4 Series technology and connectivity

Last year, BMW upgraded the BMW 4 Series to iDrive 8.5 with QuickSelect. There are no changes to report here; Tech-savvy buyers will opt for the Premium package. Prices vary depending on the powertrain and model you choose, but are well spent between $1,500 and $2,100. A Harman Kardon sound system, heated steering wheel, head-up display and remote engine start make it a real value for money. The standard BMW Technology package means Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice commands and app compatibility are all standard features.
Safety and driver assistance functions

As with the previous model year, the $700 Parking Assistance package remains a smart value and bundles a surround-view camera system with automatic parking. Buyers can also opt for the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds advanced semi-autonomous driving features for about $1,700. This upgrade makes sense for those who spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic. For everyone else, the vehicle’s standard safety equipment should go above and beyond with key features like lane departure warnings and blind spot monitoring.
Prices for the BMW 4 Series 2026

Unfortunately, the 2026 BMW 4 Series is seeing a small price increase for its latest version. The starting price for the 4 Series Gran Coupe is now $50,600, up from $49,650 last year. xDrive models, in turn, command a $600 premium over rear-wheel drive models. M440i models command even higher sticker prices; The M440i Gran Coupe is priced at $64,400, an increase of $1,200 year-over-year. Similar price increases affect the rest of the product range. The price increase is keeping pace with its main competitor, the Audi A5. For a Mercedes competitor, you’d have to upgrade to the Mercedes CLA or opt for a true two-door.
2026 BMW 4 Series: Our opinion

The BMW 4 Series is, first and foremost, a good car. However, it faces the challenge of being more expensive than the equally brilliant – and arguably better looking – 2026 BMW 3 Series. As we said at the start, the 2026 BMW 4 Series is more of a lifestyle choice (as all luxury is to some extent) rather than a bargain of the century. If your brain can’t beat your heart and you just have to have the 4 instead of the 3, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s still a great car to drive. In particular the M Performance range; The M440i walks the line between full-fledged M and standard BMW with uncanny sensitivity.
