Production of the BMW 8 Series quietly ended months ago

BMW is facing a product onslaught, with 40 new cars planned by the end of 2027. But before Munich rejuvenates almost its entire range, it quickly says goodbye to a model series. We’ve learned that the 8 Series is effectively dead, although it still appears in some configurators.

In an email to BMWBLOGA company spokesperson confirmed that production of the 8 Series has already been discontinued. Cypselus from Frankenberg told us that all variants were phased out and the final car was actually assembled in September. This timing is surprising as BMW previously announced that the M850i Edition M Heritage would enter production in November.

Although the 8 Series has been dropped from the range, the model will indirectly live on for a while. The Skytop is set to cost around €500,000 and is based on an 8 Series chassis, meaning the beauty of the targa roof will keep the 8 Series alive a little longer. BMW is building 50 cars, the first of which was recently delivered from Italy to its rightful owner.

Looking forward, the identically priced Speedtop will be a two-door touring version of the 8 Series. The station wagon isn’t scheduled to go into production until the end of next year, so the spirit of the 8 Series should still be alive in early 2027. The stunning two-seater estate will be slightly less exclusive, with BMW planning to build 70 examples.

Removing the 8 Series from the portfolio will free up production capacity for the upcoming eighth-generation 3 Series. The “G50” will be built in Dingolfing from the second half of 2026. In 2028, BMW is expected to stop producing the iX, as the iX5 and iX7 will already be available in stores.

A direct successor to the 8 Series is not planned either. Although there have been rumors of an electric Gran Coupe coming later this decade, the chances of that happening seem slim. Instead, BMW will diversify its range of luxury sedans by reintroducing the ALPINA 7 Series. Not as a single B7 model, as before, but as a trio: 740 xDrive, 760 xDrive and i7 70 xDrive.

The car is expected to hit the market next year based on the facelifted G70. It has reportedly been assigned the codename “G72,” suggesting more extensive changes than usual. We hear it will be a fully equipped 7 Series with ALPINA-exclusive details inside and out. Although it may launch in 2026, sales may not begin until later in 2027.
