It is difficult to find a plug-in hybrid SUV that actually feels luxurious and does not cost a fortune. Most PHEVs with premium functions cost 50,000 US dollars, while cheaper tends to feel simple or undermaker. However, there is an option that hits a rare balance: the BMW X5 XDRIVE45E. You have to use it, but for around 34,000 to 36,000 US dollars you will receive a proper medium -sized SUV with a strong electrical range, real performance and the type of interior that you would expect from a luxury brand.
In the meantime, the Mazda CX-70 is a new entry in the same price range, from $ 40,445 for the 3.3 turbo-privileged turbo. It is positioned as an upscale SUV, but if you compare the two side by side, the BMW offers you much more and especially if the plug-in hybrid ability is important.
Price and market position

According to Kelley Blue Book, you will find a clean 2021 or 2022 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E for only 34,500 US dollars, depending on kilometers and options. This is the same ball park as a brand new CX-70, which starts around $ 40,000 and quickly climbs with options. Remember: the BMW costs over 65,000 US dollars. The Mazda? It is medium-sized equipment in a mainstream line-up. You don’t play in the same league – until you take into account the used market.
Plug-in hybrid against mild hybrid

The BMW is a real plug-in hybrid. It uses a 3.0-liter inline six with an electric motor and a 24 kWh battery. The combined performance is 389 hp and 443 LB-FT torque. It can drive about 30 miles to electricity on average, which covers most daily commuters. And when the battery has expired, it still returns a decent fuel consumption – about 50 MPGE if they are powered efficiently. The Mazda, on the other hand, uses a mild hybrid system. It has a turbo-charged inline-six with a 48-volt battery for easy support, but without electric driving. It is rated at 280 HP and 332 LB -TFT torque, and fuel consumption is close to 25 to 28 mpg.
If you cut the gas consumption or want the flexibility to drive electrically in the city, the BMW is in a different category.
Real performance

The BMW is fast. It makes 0–60 in about 5.3 seconds and the power supply is smooth thanks to the electric thrust. It is also calm in EV mode, and the standard all-wheel drive is felt stable under all conditions.
The Mazda is not a slouch, but not in the same league. It reached 60 miles per hour in the mid-6s, and although the inline-six sounds good, it doesn’t feel so clever or effortless. The BMW also offers an optional air suspension and a more advanced traction control system.
Space and practicality

Both SUVs are similar. The Mazda is a little longer, but the BMW uses its room well. Both offer over 70 cubic foot load room with folded area and have generous legroom for passengers. Nobody has a third row, so these are medium-sized SUVs with two row for most buyers who do not carry large families around.
| Model | length | wheelbase | Fracht (seats up) | Max freight volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX -70 3.3 Turbo preferred | 200.8 in | 122.8 in | 39.6 Cu ft | 75.3 Cu ft |
| BMW X5 XDrive45e | 194.3 in | 117.1 in | 33.1 CU FT | 72.3 Cu ft |
Interior and characteristics

Even a basic spec from 2021 feels expensive. Most of the examples used are leather seats, heated front and rear seats, panoramic processes, Harman Kardon Audio and the IDRIVE 7 -Infotainment system from BMW with a digital gauge cluster. Materials and switchgear feel high. The Mazda has a clean, modern cabin with a large middle image, good materials and a solid layout. It is good for a non-luxurious brand, but the X5 XDRIVE45E has an easy advantage.
Ownership and considerations
Purchase used means that you lose the guarantee for the new cars unless you enter into a CPO model (Certified Preasented). The X5 can cost more to maintain the long term, especially from the guarantee. But you get an SUV of 65,000 US dollars for almost half of the price after only a few years – and with a much more advanced drive train.
The Mazda gives you a calming opinion with a complete guarantee and lower maintenance costs. But it is still a mainstream SUV, even if it tries to play in a first -class area.
So BMW X5 XDrive45e or Mazda CX-70?
If it releases medium-sized SUVs by $ 40,000, the Mazda CX-70 is worth a look. It is new, good -looking and properly equipped. But it is not a plug-in and it is not necessarily a luxury vehicle.
The BMW X5 XDRIVE45E offers both: plug-in hybrid ability and real luxury. It is more efficient, more efficient (if you connect it) and it has German engineering. They need to be needed, but the compromise is worth it for what they get.
