Why the Final Edition from Toyota Supra did not get the S58 engine from BMW

When spy photos of a hotter Supra appeared, there was a question about the lips of everyone: does he have the S58 engine? We have not received an answer until the final edition made up for her in November 2024. No, it didn’t get the M engine, but it got the best. The Swan song for the sports coupé contained the most strong iteration of the B58 so far. The 3.0-liter inline-six with a turbo was set to 429 hp and 420 LB-FT (570 Nm) torque.

The last issue: 429 hp from the B58

But why didn’t the Supra Final Edition get the S58 at all? As it turned out, BMW was against the idea. Shocking, I know. Why? According to non-BMW sources, M just didn’t want the Japanese car manufacturer to have access to its valuable S58. The smaller B58 appears in many non-BMW products such as the Ineos Grenadier and the Morgan Plus six, but you will not find the S58 in any car without a BMW badge. The Alpina B3 and B4 are obviously still a lot of BMWs.

Alpina’s hidden role in the Supra

Speaking of the niche brand based in Buchloe, according to the Supra final edition, a helping hand lent a helping hand. Alpina was said to be responsible for the fine -tuning of the axes. As with the regular versions, Magna Steyr builds the ultimate Supra in Graz, Austria. Toyota produces 300 units with 150 units that are assigned to Europe and 150 units in Japan. The United States also receive a MKV -endured edition with a total of 1,300 cars, but the Americans are missing the power flashing.

Supra and Z4 end of the production plans

Both the Supra and Z4 are to be stopped in 2026. Toyota has already confirmed a successor, while BMW has not committed itself to another roadster.

Although the two car manufacturers may have come together via the S58, they continue to work elsewhere. They develop a next generation fuel cell system that BMW will use for its first hydrogen production car in 2028. The name remains under closure, but we firmly believe that the future X5 (G65) will receive treatment with fuel cells.

In the meantime, Toyota stays with sports cars. Beyond the next Supra it keeps the GR86 alive and even indicated to revive the Celica and/or MR2. In addition, the luxury brand Lexus works on a V8 super sports car with front engine, which is said to have the LFR badge. Hopefully BMW will also decide to roll out a special sports car one day.
