At the beginning of this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M-boss Frank van Meel announced that a special edition 8 series would be debut later this year. As it turns out, we don’t have to wait much longer. The world premiere is planned for August in Pebble Beach during the Monterey Car Week.
This is all that BMW initially shares about what it describes as a “special car in a limited edition”. Now comes speculation. Logic suggests that it is not based on the M8 coupĂ©. Why? The F92 was discontinued in the USA a few months ago.
BMW describes it more as an 8er than M8, which could make some to be a standard model G14, G15 or G16. The fact that Frank van Meel mentioned the car strongly, but implies a certain M-nesse. We have to wait and see whether the mayor of the city of M850i points to an M850i. If not, he probably said the M8 Cabrio or M8 Gran Coupé. Both the F91 and the F93 are still available in the USA

The press release also contains a short summary of the second generation 8 in North America. It was launched in summer 2018 as V8 M850i, followed by the six-cylinder 840i models of the entry-level class and the M8 for the 2020 model year. Since BMW is visiting the history of the 8er again, we can ask ourselves whether this special edition signals the end of the line.
That can be the case. We have been reporting for years that the 8 -series series 2026 is expected. Some versions could be stopped before the end of this year. On August 14th we will find out whether the limited model will serve as a swan song of the 8er.
During the Monterey Car Week, BMW will also organize the US DEGUSION of the G87 generation M2 CS. The local premiere is locked up for the legends of the highway. It is an event in the Concours elegance event that is dedicated to German cars and organized by the official BMW, Mercedes and Audi car clubs in North America.
Apart from these two debuts, BMW brings Rolex Monterey Motorsports to a strong motorsport presence. The legendary M3 GTR (E46) will share the spotlight with the M3 GT alms (E92). In addition, the 320i Turbo IMSA Group 5 (E21) is displayed. The Art Car series is also represented by Andy Warhol’s legendary M1 Group 4 and the latest addition, Julie Mehretus M Hybrid V8.
