BMW is issuing a new safety recall in the U.S. for a small number of early F-chassis vehicles – specifically certain 2014 model year 3 Series sedans (F30), 4 Series coupes (F32) and 2 Series coupes (F22) – because a curtain airbag inflator can rupture at a weld and either leak gas or rupture.

According to the recall request, the problem is with the head airbag (side curtain) gas generator, which “may fail at the weld,” allowing stored gas to escape or, in the worst case, causing the gas generator to rupture. The safety implications go in two directions, and neither is good: a break can allow sharp metal shards to enter (or even out of) the vehicle, while a gas leak can cause the curtain airbag to only partially deploy in an accident.

Which BMW models are included?

BMW 335i F30 on the track

BMW says the recall is in effect 851 vehicles on the US market. The NHTSA campaign number associated with this promotion is 25V871. BMW’s recall documentation lists the following affected nameplates and model years:

  • 2014 BMW 3 Series Sedan: 320i / 335i / 328i (including xDrive variants)
  • 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe: 428i/435i (including xDrive variants)
  • 2014–2015 BMW 2 Series Coupe: 228i / M235i (including xDrive variants)

What is the solution?

The remedy is very simple: the dealer will replace the head airbags free of charge. Notification letters for BMW owners are expected to be sent on February 6, 2026. If you have any questions, reach BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Owners can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-888-275-9171).

What owners should do now

Even if you don’t have the letter yet, you can take a few quick steps:

1. Check your VIN on NHTSA’s recall search (or BMW’s recall page) to confirm if your specific vehicle is included.
2. If your VIN indicates an open recall, arrange the repair with a BMW dealer – the replacement is free.
