BMW still opts for the successor to the Coupé models of the series and the 8 -series series

Traditional two-door coupé models are difficult in 2025, regardless of the segment or the brand. BMW is one of just one handful of brands that are still in a sensible way in the segment, but it becomes more difficult to shop for a two -door Bavaria from Bavaria. Of the three coupé models BMW offers – 2 series, 4 and 8 – one, the 8er, the production almost exclusively in production. Another, the 4 Series, is over half of a regular BMW production cycle that has been offered for sale since 2021. In exclusive conversations with Bernd Koerber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management, we learned that the fire did not completely decide what comes next to the high-marked duo of Two-doors.

BMW is still planning when it comes to coupes

When asked whether Coupés historically, a driver-oriented and emotional model and not a practical benefit-still has a home with a brand that is increasingly focused on electrification, Koerber is not in line. “We are still in decisions,” he begins. We have 8 series, we have 4 series. So what is the succession plan? We are still there. So nothing specific. “Discourely careful, although he emphasizes that the brands look at the internal combustion and electrification on a“ continuum ”. This could mean that EV and gas-powered coupes are on the horizon, but of course BMW has not yet confirmed this.

However, Koerber offers a certain reassurance if it is further asked. Even better, he admits that even if a product does not necessarily appear in a direct episode, this does not mean that BMW has left the segment. “We are all car lovers,” says Koerber, “that’s why we will always try to find ways. Even if there are sometimes for various reasons, technology, architecture, platform crossing, etc. and we create a gap.” He claims that the brand always deals with obstacles. Or: “How can we let it work?” As he says. That means Koeber is aware of what his company ultimately has to do: sell cars. “Of course it has to make economic sense at some point,” he says.

Niche projects make financial sense

We have already seen this approach with highly enthusiastic models such as speedtop and skytop, both of which make financial sense at their price of $ 500,000. Koerber also discussed the importance of “profitable niches”. “If we can get it up and forth, we will really do it,” says Koerber.

The BMW 8 series ends the production for some time in early 2026, although exactly when it is still unclear, Sinus BMW did not officially told this. The 4 Series should also remain in production by 2028. In the meantime, Bayern gave the 4 Series facelifting for the 2025 model year. Normally facelifts (or LCI, life cycle impulse, in BMW-Speak) only come when a car has reached halfway in its planned production run.

If BMW has not yet signed a successor, it can take a while for us to see a really new version of both. At least now we know that it may not be “goodbye”, but only “see you later”.
