The Audi Activesphere concept marks the culmination of the sphere concept vehicles produced by Audi. The Audi Activesphere is the fourth model in the Sphere range, making its debut in April 2022 after the Audi Skysphere Roadster in 2021 and the Audi grandsphere sedan and Audi urbansphere space concept.
The four-door crossover coupe with a versatile body design is equally adept on and off-road thanks to its suspension and drivetrain. The concept car was equipped with a steering wheel and pedals that enable autonomous driving while allowing the driver to actively control the car. The model also has classic proportions and lines and can be converted into a pickup truck for transporting high-quality sports equipment. The loading area offers enough space for two e-bikes.
The new concept car was built and designed at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu by studio manager Gael Buzyn and his team. The Audi Activesphere joins the sphere family of concept vehicles with electric drive and fast-charging technology from Audi’s PSA modular system. The vehicle combines the sustainability, dynamics and long-distance suitability of high-end electric vehicles with locally emission-free range of more than 600 km and fast charging times thanks to 800-volt technology.
In addition, the PPE technology enables initial charging times, 10 minutes is enough to take on board enough energy to propel the car for more than 300 kilometers and in less than 25 minutes the 5 100 kWh battery charges 80 percent up. With a range of over 600 kilometers, the Audi activesphere is suitable for long journeys.
Audi Dimensions is the innovative operating concept that combines the physical and virtual world “Mixed Reality” by displaying digital content in real time in the driver’s field of vision. The high-tech goggles provide a view of the real environment and route while displaying 3D content and interactive elements.
At 4.98 meters long, 2.07 meters wide and 1.60 meters high, the Audi Activesphere concept is a member of the premium segment. The wheelbase is 2.97 meters to give passengers maximum legroom, while the front and rear overhangs are short for a more compact feel.
The vehicle’s exterior features stylish camera mirrors on the front doors to reduce drag, a dynamic roof arch, a flat cabin, 22-inch wheels with movable segments and impressive ground clearance, and voluminous 285/55 tires perfect for all terrains are suitable. Glass surfaces make up a significant part of the vehicle body, including the sweeping tailgate with large areas of glazing, the transparent roof and the transparent Singleframe on the front end for a clear view.
With the activesphere, a car with a Sportback hatchback combines the design elements and technical equipment of an allroad for the first time. For this reason, Audi has named the new body variant “active Sportback” in contrast to the all road. The Audi activesphere concept has dark high-gloss finishes in arctic teal on the front and rear as well as under the doors in the side area, while the floor pan and the cabin have matt-painted surfaces.
Similar to the Audi grandsphere concept, the doors of the Audi activesphere open in opposite directions. The exterior also has daytime running lights and rear lights, which provide even more precision and contrast with ultra-fine micro-LED technology.
The interior of the Activesphere is finished in warm lava red with the seat surfaces, door and front panel, which contrasts with the dark exterior. When the Audi activesphere concept drives in autonomous mode, the instrument panel, steering wheel and pedals disappear into an invisible position. A wide space opens up in front of the driver, reaching to the front end of the active sphere and beyond to allow for an unobstructed view.
Electric motors on the front and rear axles of the all-wheel drive Audi activesphere concept deliver an output of 325 kW and 720 Nm of torque. The front and rear wheels are connected via a five-link axle and the car features Audi adaptive air suspension with adaptive dampers.
Information about the car, the battery range and charging stations can also be called up inside and outside the vehicle. And if necessary, there are also advance warnings such as low tire pressure and a weather forecast function.
